Germany is more dependent on exports than virtually any other country in Europe. This was made painfully apparent during the crisis of 2008/09. Conversely, the decisive impetus for the current upswing has also come from the export markets. The steady recovery, numerous economic stimulus programmes and backlog effects in Germany's main trading partners have helped to improve the business situation of the country's export-oriented firms. Just how important exports have become for German companies is indicated, for example by the fact that a large proportion of them already generate more than half of their total turnover with cross-border businesses.
