The idea to create Creditreform was first conceived in 1879 in Mainz, Germany. A group of local merchants came together to create an association in order to protect themselves against unfair business partners by exchanging information on such partners and helping each other when collecting bad debts. In only 10 years, the idea spread over the whole of Germany and further associations were created in almost all major German towns. Usually one member assumed the task of co-ordinator.

The co-ordinators merged into regional associations and the regional associations formed a centralised organisation. Similar associations were created in other countries. Before the Second World War, there were Creditreform offices from Oslo to Istanbul and from London to Warszaw. Between 1945 and 1990, the activity of the organisation was limited to German speaking Europe: Germany, Luxembourg, Austria, Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Following the political changes during the 90s in Central and Eastern Europe, Creditreform expanded its presence into Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, Russia, Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, the Ukraine, Croatia, Slovenia, Serbia, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. Together with the UK, Italy, Turkey and China, there are currently 23 countries within the group.
